CAHOOTS NI MAGIC
April's Magic Trick
Number Magic! This trick is really impressive and works every time!
Before your friends arrive write down a four figure number that is double the
current year's date, i.e. if it is 2008, the number would be 4016. Seal this
number in an envelope.
Ask a volunteer to write down the following numbers;
1) The year they were born, i.e. 1998
2) Their age, i.e. 10
3) A year that something important happened to them, i.e. the year their
baby sister was born or the year they moved to a new house.
4)The number of years that have passed since this important event to the
current year, i.e. if it happened in 2006 they would write the number 2.
Get another volunteer to total up these numbers. Open up the envelope. The
total will be the same as the number you have already written down!
March's Magic Trick
Cut the Kings - This trick will make your friend look like a magical card
dealer!
How it's done...
1 - Before your friends arrive separate the Aces and Kings from a deck of
cards. Place the four aces on the top of the deck of cards and then place
the Kings on top of the Aces.
2 - Select a friend and ask them to deal out two piles of cards. Comment
that they look like they could deal out an amazing hand of cards. They do
not need to deal the entire deck so after a short while tell them that they can
stop anytime they like. Place the undealt cards aside.
3 - Instruct your friend to choose a pile and deal it into two smaller piles. Ask
them to do the same with the other pile. You should end up with four piles of
cards.
4 - Get your friend to turn over the top card on each pile - they will all be Kings.
Tell them you knew they could deal a great hand of cards and then ask them
what card is higher than a King? - an Ace. Do some magical movements
over the cards with your hands and then turn up the top card of each pile to
reveal four Aces! Take a bow!
February's Magic Trick
A card location trick - A deck of cards is separated into two halves and
shuffled by a spectator. They then select a card from one pile and place
the card in the other pile. This pile is then mixed. By simply looking through
the pile you will be able to locate the spectators card - magic!
How it's done...
1 - Before your friends arrive separate a deck of cards into clubs, hearts,
spades and diamonds. Mix the clubs and hearts together, and mix the
spades and diamons together. Place the two piles together, one on top of
the other, to form a single deck.
2 - When your friends arrive take out your deck of cards and split the deck at
the halfway point and lay the two halves of the deck on the table. You should
have one pile with clubs and hearts and a second pile containing spades
and diamonds.
3 - Ask a friend to pick a card from one of the piles and memorise it. Ask
them to place the card in the other pile and mix it.
4 - You will now find the card by looking through the pile of cards for the odd
card. For example, if all the cards in the pile are clubs and hearts, look for a
spade or diamond. This will be your friends card. Pull out the card and place
it face down on the table. Reveal it dramatically to your friend as their card.
Voila!
January's Magic Trick
Money Magic - A banknote is placed in one of three envelopes which are then mixed up by an audience member when you are not looking. You then rip up two of the envelopes leaving the third envelope unharmed with the banknote inside!

Picture 1 - Lay out three matching envelopes before your audience arrive and mark one of the envelopes with a small, faint pencil mark on both sides. This should only be visible to you.
Picture 2 - Invite your friends in and ask one of them to lend you a banknote. Fold the banknote and two blank pieces of paper into quarters. Try to make them all the same size.
Picture 3 - Get one of your friends to insert the pieces of paper and the banknote into the envelopes.
Picture 4 - Turn your back and ask your friend to mix up the envelopes and lay them out in a row on a table so that neither you or them know where the money is.
Picture 5 - Turn around and as try to spot the marked envelope as quickly as possible. Slam your hand down on the other two envelopes, pick them up and rip them to pieces. The faster you tear up the envelopes the more amazing the trick will appear.
Picture 6 - Ask the person who lent you the money to remove their money from the remaining envelope.
MAGIC!
December's Magic Trick
Bouncing bread roll - Make a bread roll bounce as it it were a tennis ball!

Picture 1 - Sit at a table and pick up a bread roll and hold it out at shoulder height (this trick would work just as well with a piece of fruit).
Picture 2 - Bring your hand down below the table's edge as if you are about to bounce it like a bouncy ball.
Picture 3 - When the bread roll is out of sight of the audience raise your foot ready to tap against the floor. This has to happen all very quickly if this trick is to work.
Picture 4 - Instead of dropping the bread roll to bounce it, turn your hand upwards and flick the roll up into the air. You should be careful not to move the arm itself as this will give the game away - only the wrist should move. Tap your foot a split second before you toss the roll. This will sound like the bread roll has hit the ground and bounced back up.
Picture 5 - Watch with amazement as the bread roll appears above the table.
MAGIC!
November's Magic Trick
Read the mind of your friends with this magic book trick.
Secret:
Get two or three books that you have double copies of

The copies of the books must be kept in a seperate room. Ask one of your friends to pick a book and say the title. Get them to choose a random page number and also a number that could be allocated to a line in the page of the book. Lastly get somebody to pick a number between 1 and 10. This should indicate a word on a line.
Leave the room and explain that you are doing this to avoid any cheating.
When you are alone get your duplicate book and look up the page, line and word number that your friends shouted out.
Return to the room and pretend to be using your magic powers to conjour up the chosen word in your minds eye! Reveal the word by writing it down on a large sheet of card and getting one of your friends to shout out the word first before you show your prediction.
October's Magic Trick
Find a hidden coin under the bottle tops everytime!
Secret:

Picture 1 - Attach some invisible thread or one of your hairs to the
underside of a coin with some tape (in the pictures we have used green
thread so you can see it better).
Picture 2 - Place three bottle tops on a table and ask one of your friends
to choose a bottle top and cover the coin with it.
Picture 3 - Get your friend to switch the bottle tops around without you
looking at them. Tell them you are going to guess which bottle top the coin
is under by using your magic powers.
Picture 4 - When they have finished mixing up the bottle tops have a look
for your secret thread without being obvious.
Picture 5 - Lift the bottle top with the coin under it and watch your
friends be amazed. You can do this trick over and over again and get it
right every time.
September's Magic Trick
Produce a silk napkin from thin air and dazzle your friends!
Secret:

Picture 1 - To prepare, place a silk handkerchief in front of you. Have
one corner facing you.
Picture 2 - Fold the silk in half, away from you.
Picture 3 - Roll the silk away from you as tightly and neatly as possible.
Picture 4 - Roll the silk from one end to the other, again as tightly as
possible.
Picture 5 - Leave the end of the silk sticking out of the roll.
Picture 6 - This shows you a secret view of where you place the silk in
your hand. Hold the end of the roll between your thumb and forefinger.
Picture 7 - From the front your audience should not be able to see the silk.
Point at something imaginary in the air.
Picture 8 - Reach up to that point and let the silk unroll. It should
appear as if from nowhere!
August's Magic Trick
Amaze your friends with this fantastic napkin trick.
Effect:Tear a paper napkin into pieces and magically make the
pieces weld themselves together again. The napkins in the drawings below
are in different colours for ease of explanation but you should use two
napkins of the same colour.
Secret:

Picture 1 - Put some glue on the top right corner of a paper napkin.
Picture 2 - Place your second napkin over the first napkin and glue
them to each other at the top right corner.
Picture 3 - Scrunch up the napkin on top into a tight ball. This should all
be done before your friends arrive.
Picture 4 - Hold the flat napkin up so that the scrumpled up napkin facing
you and your friends can't see it. Rip the napkin down the centre.
Picture 5 - Place the left half of the napkin in front of the right half.
Rip it down the centre.
Picture 6 - Place the left pieces in front of the right, then turn the strip
sideways. Rip the strip down the centre.
Picture 7 - Place the pieces in front of the right again. Rip one final time
down the centre.
Picture 8 - Place the final pieces of paper in front of the right-hand.
Squeeze the edges together. As you squeeze, secretly turn them round so
that the complete napkin is facing your friends.
Picture 9 - Start to open out the napkin, keeping hold of the other ripped
napkin in your right hand.
Picture 10 - Fold out the entire napkin.
Picture 11 - The ripped pieces are hidden behind the folded out napkin.
To finish the trick off crumple the napkin and throw it away. Voila!
July's Magic Trick
For this months trick lets master a basic coin technique called 'Finger Palm and Production'
Effect:
The Finger Palm is an essential grip in coin magic. It allows you to
secretly hold and therefore hide a coin in your hand. The coin can be
made to appear from anywhere, using the Finger Palm Production.
Secret:
Position the coin at the base of your right second and third fingers.
It is held in place by the creases in your skin and your fingers
curling ro und it to hold it. Pretend that you have seen something
floating in the air before you. Point at it with your hand holding the
coin. The audience should not be able to see the coin. As you reach
for whatever you have seen use your thumb to push the coin from its
position at the base of your fingers to the fingertips (see secret view!).
The coin should look as if it has appeaered from nowhere.
June's Magic Trick
Dazzle your friends with the amazing clinging cutlery trick!
Effect:A fork is made to cling to your hand - the secret is explained to
your friends but moments later the fork is once again made to cling to your
hand in an even more amazing way!
Secret:

Hold a fork in your left hand. Grip your left wrist with your right hand
and open your left hand out wide. The right first finger stretches out to
hold the fork in place (do this secretly!). From the front this should look
like the fork is stuck to your hand.
You can either stop the trick here or you can show your friends at this point how you did the trick. THEN, return your hand to the same position. Remove your right hand completly - the fork should stay suspended on its own!!
Secret 2: The last picture above shows how the knife is held in place
using a watch strap (you should have done this from the start of the whole
trick!) When you pretended to reveal the secret earlier to your friends, the
knife is covered by your first finger. MAGIC!!
(Warning - Make sure an adult is present and never use sharp cutlery).
May's Magic Trick
Effect: Someone picks a random card, then puts it back in the deck, then you magically find it!
Secret:
Get one
of your audience to shuffle a deck of cards and then pick one out
at random. Ask them to look closely at their card and memorise
it. Then you take the deck of cards, split it in the middle
and have the person insert their mystery card back into the deck.
BUT here's the secret... when you split (or 'cut') the deck
in two, have a quick sneaky glance at the bottom card of the top
half of the deck. Remember this well - it will be your 'locator'
card which will help you find the mystery card. After
your audience member has put their card on top of the bottom half
of the pile, you set the top half on top of it. This will
mean that your locator card will be right next to the audience member's
mystery card. Now get
the audience member to cut the cards a few times - but not shuffle
them. This means that your locator card should stay next to
the mystery card. Then all you have to do is take the deck
of cards, flick through them until you find your locator card and
then pull out the mystery card as it will be the one next to your
locator! Magic!!
Hint: Remember to practice plenty of times before you show anyone and
never do the same trick for someone twice - don't give them the
chance to work out how you did it!
