If you have recently enjoyed a Cahoots NI event and would like to do so again in the future along with experiencing many different arts and cultural events, it is vital that you support the 'Keep Our Arts Alive' campaign. Currently Northern Ireland invests £6.13 per head of population in stark comparison to England (£8.39); Wales (£9.17); Scotland (£11.93) and the Republic of Ireland (£12.61). The gulf is set to widen with other regions looking to increase their arts expenditure. If funding is not increased to £11.55 per person in Northern Ireland, we can look forward to the closing of our most valued cultural institiutions and programmes.
A draft budget recently proposed by the Assembly outlines an increased investment in the arts by £4.25 million spread over three years - as opposed to the £26million necessary to sustain the sector. This is not good enough.
What can be done?
The draft budget is out for consultation until January 4 2008. Between now and then we must voice our dismay at the lack of funding for the arts. Responses can be sent to: Melanie McGinnis, Economic Policy Unit, OFMDFM, Rm E5.22, Castle Buildings, Stormont, Belfast, BT4 3SR Tel: 028 9052 0093, E-mail: pfgbudget@nics.gov.uk.
Keepourartsalive is a new joint campaign by the arts sector and the Arts Council of Northern Ireland and will aim to improve the outcome for the arts through the NI Draft Budget 2008-2011 public consulltation phase. Visit their website at www.keepourartsalive.com for more info on how you can support the campaign.
Seminars across Northern Ireland are being held as part of the public consultation process. The more people that attend the more comments will be officially recorded and noted.
All events will begin at 7pm and run until approximately 9.00pm. Anyone wishing to attend any of these events should ring the Economic Policy Unit in OFMDFM on 028 9092 0093. A rally at Stormont is to be held on Monday 10th Dec at 10.30am and it is vital that as many people as possible attend. Please try to come along and show your support. Keep an eye on the Keepourartsalive site for more details.
THE FLEA PIT - A FLEATASTIC SUCCESS!
(part of the Belfast Festival @ Queens)
While our fleas Ivan the Bulgarian Beastie, Lady Isobella Jumpin Ella and Mad Rad Rodricco enjoy a well earned rest after their nine day run at the Belfast Festival at Queens you can check out some of our reviews below. 'It's the faces of the kids that make it all worthwhile. They believe everything they see, their eyes wide as saucers, mouths hanging open in disbelief - the picture of innocence.' Performance Review - Culture Northern Ireland - 26/10/07 - Lee Henry
'The ancient art of the flea circus was brought back to life in style by children's theatre company Cahoots NI in the magical location of the Little Pavillion in Botanic Gardens. Kids young and old marvelled at this side-show of leaping fleas and sensational illusions... This perfect pre-halloween adventure will leave you itching for more.' The Irish News - 25/10/07 - Jenny Lee
'Afterwards, the hugely appreciative audience is taken back stage where a professor (looking very like Dan Gordon) shows us around a museum of curiosities, and explains how the human flea came to be. Who'd of thought that nits could be so entertaining?' Belfast Telegraph - 29/10/07- Grania McFadden
If you missed our international fleas amazing people with their incredible feats of mind reading, weightlifting and trapeze stunts in Belfast then there is a chance you could catch them at the Imaginate Childrens International Theatre Festival in Edinburgh May 2008. Watch this Space!
MAGIC MEDICINE - THE BUMBLEBEE ORCHESTRA COMPLETES PILOT TOUR OF NORTHERN IRELAND
We are delighted to announce the successful completion of our four week pilot tour of THE BUMBLEBEE ORCHESTRA. The project saw four giant, musical bumblebees visit various healthcare settings throughout Northern Ireland and engage young audiences through puppetry, live music, magical illusion, song, dance and comedy. It is a highly interactive piece which has been enjoyed by small groups of children with varying physical and learning disabilities in common room settings. The project also visited hospitals, special schools and adult training and resource centres. The project has created an atmosphere of fun and a little bit of magic within the facilities it visited.
'The project was extremely positive for all the children and staff due to all the interaction involved.' Orana Respite Unit, Newry
'I feel the Bumblebee Orchestra would be an asset to any proramme promoting laughter and joy as part of enhancing coping mechanisms and healing hearts.' Balloo Training and Resource Centre, Bangor The BUMBLEBEE ORCHESTRA has sprung from the success of Cahoots NI’s ongoing Bedside Theatre project that was recently nominated in the Health category of the National Lottery Awards 2007. It competed against just nine other projects from the UK. The BUMBLEBEE ORCHESTRA will be hitting the road again in 2008. MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEWYEAR TO ONE AND ALL from the CAHOOTS NI TEAM! The project will feature mini theatre performances based around the idea of a Bumble Bee orchestra. The production will be designed to be delivered to a small group of children within a ward setting or common room area. This show will feature live music, moving lights and sensory effects to engage children in active participation. The Musician is a new show about old themes: greed, jealousy and above all REVENGE! It tells the story of a little boy with no parents or someone to love him. All he has is a mouse. The boy finds a talent when he meets a strange musician that comes to town. The musician teaches the boy but soon finds that his talent is no match for the eager child. The boy's talent gives him wealth and fame but at what cost?
The show has music throughout and is best described as mini-opera! That means that everyone sings when they should be talking.... strange but true. After all, it is the story of a musician!
Be prepared to be frightened and thrilled as The Musician takes you back in time to hear how one of our most famous villains became bad. Search for The Hound of Ulster! This is the first time Cahoots NI have an adapted an Irish myth for children but an equally hard task was finding a hound! Sparky - a six-year old lurcher looked the part but company General Manager, Louise ONeil was reluctant to let her pampered pet Sparky away on tour for a month. A wee bit of stage fright had also prevented Sparky appear in Manchester at the Palace Theatre in 2003 so the search went on ! Sparky at home in Co. Down Next up was Gus - a Great Dane at only eight months old but already towering in height and strength - a dog fit for a hero! Gus unfortunately was a wee bit too soft and playful, being still a pup he was more content to lick his opponents than put up a fight. Gus - Strangford Lough, Co Down Well Cahoots NI's version of 'Cuchulain: The Hound of Ulster' is now on tour so you'll just have to get along to a venue nearest you to see the star of the show - Charlie. But of course if you think you know the real hound of Ulster then send us a picture for our website. Who knows there's always the possibility of a sequel!
Sparky & Gus resting after a hard day in rehearsals.
Cahoots NI go international! Cahoots NI are going East and West in 2007 presenting work in Malta and Washington DC. In February the company took their innovative Bedside Theatre project to St Luke's Hospital - the largest in Malta - and the children's cancer hospital Boffa. Supported by the British Council the company also made presentation at an international Arts & Health Care Conference during their visit. Bedside Theatre is short performance piece based around a miniature flea circus and aims to bring laughter and light relief to children in hospital. The company aims to develop this project further taking new performances into hospice and respite settings over the coming year. In April the Cahoots NI will present Cuchulain: Hound of Ulster at EDGEfest - the first international children's festival at the Imagination Stage, Washington DC and the first time the company have played in the USA and staged an Irish myth for children. With the support of the Department for Culture, Arts & Leisure, Cahoots NI will be one of the organisations representing Northern Ireland in the run up to the to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival - the largest festival in the USA - which takes place in July. This will follow on from an all Ireland tour in March. MALTA TOUR FEBRUARY 2007
Cahoots NI fleas set off on their first international tour of the year! The Bedside Theatre Fleas packed their suitcases and set off to Malta (with their helpers) to take part in the Valletta Creative Forum. The event was been organised by the British Council in Malta. Watch this space! Monday 19th February Bedside Theatre visited an elderly residential hospital with an incredible 1,000 residents. One of the most relaxed and happy facilities that Caragh - Education & Outreach Officer has ever experienced. The residents responce was fantastic with around 25 members of staff also seeing the fleas perform their magic tricks and keen to have another visit later in the year. Cahoots NI then went on to visit the Manoel Theatre - an original Baroque theatre built in 1528. Holding an audience of only 500 this would be a wonderful and intimate space for a small show. Children's theatre is still realtively new in Malta so who knows Cahoots NI may be back to bring all their magic to this mediterranean island. Washington tour Both the production of Cuchulain and the Create a Superhero workshops will travel to the Imagination Stage in Washington DC to take part in EDGEfest - the first ever children's festival in April as a run up to the Smithsonian Folklife Festival in Washington DC in the Summer. This will be the first time Northern Ireland has been represented at the Smithsonian Folklife Festival.

'Only Beelieve' Opens for Buzzness Our new production opened on Thursday 19 October as part of the Belfast Festival at Queen's and welcomed Nettlefield Primary School to the first show. Kiran Acharya from Culture Northern Ireland was in the audience and gave us this review: "Combining tall day-glo sets, music, and live - action black - light puppetry for the illusion of free-flying motion, Cahoots NI have produced 'Only Beelieve' , a high-flying tale of insect friendship, woodland enchantment and invisible magic . 'Only Beelieve', an active, lively performance, has tree-dwelling beasties dropping from the sky and creatures crawling around the crowd. Princess Clara encounters a host of characters in the luminous forest including Declan, a caterpillar with a fine line in self-empowering ballads. In his words, 'You don't have to know how the magic works, you only have to believe that it does'. Only Beelieve now in rehearsal. Cahoots NI, Dan Gordon and Niki Doherty are now in rehearsal for our next exciting new show 'Only Beelieve' which will be performed as part of Belfast Festival at Queen's from Thursday 19 to Saturday 21 October. A couple of busy bees, Elizabeth and Sarah took a trip down to the rehearsals to meet Tyrone the Fly (played by Dan) amongst the other stars of the show.
New Show Reel A snap-shot of all our previous work is now available on this website to view or download capturing the vibrant imagery, magic and music of Cahoots NI's performances. If you would like a copy please contact us.
Bedside Theatre took to the streets of Germany over the Summer. See our diary pages below. Bremen Diary Sunday 21st August Our final day in Bremen and we all move indoors to perform at the Shakespeare Theatre. It gives everybody a chance to see each other's work and have a laugh! We are all very sad to be leaving but have really enjoyed our time here....let's hope we have the chance to come back again - hope you enjoyed the Diary.
Saturday 20th August Today we went in search of the famous statue of the Bremen Buskers. Hundreds of people queue to hold onto the donkey's legs and make a wish! The Bremen Buskers is one of the best known Brothers Grimm fairytales and everywhere you look there are references to the story. The shows have all been well received and everyone's having a hoot of a time. Behind every corner there's a surprise. Today I bumped into the Australian performers Icarus - 2 large Kangaroos on stilts!
Friday 19th August With some free time before the opening of our show we decided to check out Bremen.. what a beautiful city. At 6.00pm the rain stopped and out popped the sun - what good luck! Nothing could have prepared us for how big a festival La Strada is. There are thousands of people roaming the idyllic streets in search of shows.
Hugh, Christina and Hillas (I should say Madam Tip Top, Fingers Mc Tavis & Flip Flop!) were stunning...The Flea Circus is a hit & many hundreds of people stopped to witness the strange antics of our Irish Fleas.
Thursday 18th August We finally made it! After a long journey we eventually arrived in Bremen just in time to see the opening ceremony. This was a spectacular show that featured circus and dance. There is a great atmosphere here and it looks like everyone living in the city has turned up to see the opening show. Our Flea Circus arrived safely and everyone's looking forward to performing tomorrow. All the people from La Strada have made us very welcome. Hope the fleas have a good nights sleep!
Bedside Theatre Takes to the Streets!
Cahoots NI are taking the magical madness of Madam Tip Tops's performing fleas to the streets of Bremen, West Germany for this year's La Strada - International Festival of Street Theatre August 17th to 20th. Developed in 2004 for a hospital setting, the Bedside Theatre Flea Circus has performed for sick children across Northern Ireland but now the organizers of La Strada want to bring the delights of this miniature marvel to the medieval streets of Bremen. Three performers will take a variety of music, magic and the mysterious Flea Circus onto the streets delivering mini-theatre shows for children, adults and families. The Flea Circus will be rolled out along the cobblestones on a special trolley - a mechanical masterpiece which manipulates imaginary fleas to perform circus acts such as high-wire walking, trapeze acts and diving into a pool! "The shows are highly visual and coupled with their intimacy and limited language it makes the whole interactive experience very special for each child involved and ideal for street performance. We certainly hope to raise more than a few smiles from the audience in Germany and hopefully from Customs Officials," explained Paul McEneaney, Artistic Director of Cahoots NI. | ||||||||||||||||||||
